Quilting Terms

One of the keys to becoming a successful quilter is understanding the language of quilting terms and jargon. Whether you’re looking to start your first quilt or simply want to expand your quilting knowledge, it’s important to have a solid understanding of these terms, so you can feel confident as you embark on your next quilting project.

The layer of material that is sandwiched between the quilt top and backing. Batting can be made from a variety of materials, such as cotton, wool, or polyester. Which batting is the right choice for your project? Factors to consider are Loft and Fiber:

LOFT

Loft determines the thickness of your batting.
Low Loft = thin
High Loft = thick

  • Low Loft batting makes a thinner, less bulky quilt. If you want your finished project to have a flatter
appearance. Great also for wall hangings and place mats.
  • High Loft batting produce a thicker, puffier quilt. Often used for a larger more open pattern stitching
and will show off the quilting.

FIBER
What is the batting made of? Cotton, Polyester, Wool, Bamboo and Silk.

  • Cotton Batting – Cotton batting is a light and breathable natural fiber. It is a wonderful option for
machine quilting. It washes without pilling and shrinks slightly. I especially like when the batting
shrinks slightly after that first wash giving the quilt a softer vintage look. Cotton batting also ages
well and softens nicely over time.
  • Polyester Batting – Poly batting is usually less expensive. It is lightweight, very durable and doesn’t
shrink. Polyester batting options are generally warmer – providing insulation without a lot of extra
    weight.
  • Cotton/Poly blend batting (usually 80% cotton/20% polyester). Very similar to the cotton
option, but a cotton poly blend is often times less expensive and doesn’t shrink much. This
batting is good for machine quilting.
  • Wool batting – 100% natural fiber, but it can shrink. I love wool batting because is warmer
and at the same time light weight and actually breaths well. Wool batting resists folding
and creasing. You will find that it has great stitch-definition for showing off fancy machine
    quilting.
  • Bamboo Batting – eco-friendly, natural fiber. It has great breathability and known for wicking
moisture. Most bamboo batting is a blend of 50% bamboo/50% cotton. When washed, you
will see about 2% shrinkage. Bamboo batting is ideal for machine quilting and drapes well.
  • Silk Batting - Silk Batting breathes naturally, making it an excellent choice for airy,
lightweight quilts. It is a cool quilt but offers excellent warmth. Silk Batting should be
washed by hand or by machine using the delicate cycle with cool water. You will get about
    5% shrinkage.

Whichever batting you choose for your quilt, make sure it is 4 inches larger (both length and width) than
your quilt top.
